BUMP and JUMP

Bump and Jump Sails grew out of Calvert Sails in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Pierre-Marc Bellion, a Calvert designer at the time, founded the company in 1990 and began selling sails in France in ‘92.

The Bump and Jump line, one freeride sail, ranges from 3.5 to 8.0 meters. Bump and Jump claims value to be the sail’s strongest point. In other words, it’s cheap but still great, they say—an “all-in-one all-star.” Bump and Jump especially boasts about light weight, fast rigging and maneuverability.
BUMP & JUMP 5.0
Mast: 430/21 Boom: 172
Battens: 5 Cams: NONE
Weight: 6.5/3kg Speed: 3.67 Power: 3.33 Stability: 2.O Range: 2.33 Wtrstart: 4.00 Overall: 3.07 Price: $280

But the two Bump and Jump in our test were the least liked of all our sails. Most of the time they sat on the rack; word travels fast, and no one wanted a session that might not be fun. They both got wretched marks in stability and range. For the sake of good manners, the comments were mostly verbal and kept off the record by testers. The kindest thing that was said: “The Bump and Jump sail [5.0] was a level below any of the other sails in the test.”

Good, experienced sailors and designers are behind Bump and Jumps, but evidently a lot is being lost along the way to market. But you can’t beat the price, so maybe Bump and Jump are indeed the answer for some sailors. We just don’t know who those sailors would be. A sail that’s unstable is no bargain.

But to be fair, you can hardly go the bank on one sailor’s single experience with a sail, as is the case with the 6.0 here.
