HALF WAY ACROSS THE ATLANTIC: Thursday, September 17
Conditions this morning looked good with sunshine, 11-20 knots of wind and 15 foot swell. In the first leg, the USA rep, Dave Weiss, never got sailing due to equipment problems. In the process of retriving the gear both sail and mast were trashed. Europe/France member Jason Gilbert sailed for about an hour before exhaustion set in. The remaining hour of endurance racing and final sprint were dominated by Nichlas Olasson, Liberty, with Philip Adamidis, Greece following him in. By the beginning of the second leg, there were only two chase boats available so the race committee decided that only professional sailors would be allowed in the afternoon leg. "I'm here to sail," said Eddy Patricelli, the rejected, USA sailor. "Those boats are the only thing between me and some big water, so I have to respect the decision." Antoine Matin, Europe/France was also unable to sail. The final leg was spectacular. In addition to Anders Bringdal, Micah Buzianis and Robert Teriitehau, Ken Winner (the USA team captain and reserve sailor) was granted an opportunity to try the Atlantic. These were clearly the four strongest sailors on the KK, and their skills were obvious. They sailed for 3 hours, bombing down swells, jumping the wake of the KK and showing off for everyone. Micah's booms had gotten greasy on the KK, so he had problems holding on and eventually quit the leg early. Winner's board cracked in half during a tack after two hours of hard sailing. "The KK was a mile away when it happened, so after that, I sailed very carefully. Just a little nerve-wracking." Anders and Robert sailed as a team for much of the afternoon. This is the second time that Robert has talked his way into a match "just to get a little sailing in" -- he never seems to tire, and was singing happily to himself tonight as he stored his gear. Spirits are high at the fancy Bavarian theme dinner. An international ping pong tournament is brewing on level three as the macho RIB drivers are dressing up as women on level 6. No question about it, the TAWR is one great adventure!
