TransAtlantic Windsurf RaceUS Team NewsUS Team Sponsors
280 miles off England, Sunday, September 20 by Nancy Roach

Sunshine and light winds brought out large sails and boards for today's final full day of the most memorable Trans-Atlantic Windsurfing Race.

Anders Bringdal played the guinea pig and jumped in with a 9.5 sail to see if there was enough wind to plane and stay upwind. After a tentative go-ahead from Bringdal, Jean-Paul Fantis-Greece, Jason Gilbert-European and Jace Panebianco-USA joined him on the water for a 1 hour endurance sail followed by a half hour sprint. Today the racers sailed upwind of the KK instead of behind, and at times, the fleet was separated by as much as a mile. Bringdal dominated both the endurance run and the sprint, followed by Panebianco, Gilbert and Fantis.

The wind picked up slightly for the afternoon leg, but not enough to justify smaller gear, as Micah Buzianis - Greece, Nicolas Olasson-Liberty, Jason Gilbert-European and Eddy Patricelli-USA set out on the second leg. The KK's helicopter was also out for photography and fun, along with two chase boats. During the 1.5 hour endurance sail, the entire fleet crossed the path of several Spanish fishing boats. Buzianis sailed between two boats as the helicopter buzzed them, and the radio net filled up with Spanish voices saying "Ai...Caramba!"" Several schools of dolphin were spotted nearby, and a few jumped up in front of Patricelli in the middle of this long leg.

Again, the racers were upwind of the KK for most of the endurance leg. As the sprint began, Buzianis and Gilbert took off. Buzianis stayed in front, followed by Olasson, Gilbert and Patricelli. Gilbert sailed both legs for his team today, and was last seen headed for bed.

The film crew spliced together a compilation of the trip and previewed it tonight to a noisy and appreciative crowd. A video will be made available early December. The KK is scheduled to see the Lizard around 8 am, and arrive in Weymouth between 2 and 3 pm.
