FIRST RACE: USA WINS! The TAWR2000 finally got underway with tremendous fanfare today and the underdog USA team scored a decisive victory in shifty winds. With the RIBs still delayed, the organizers launched the race and the fleet raced to Cadiz, Spain to meet up with the boats. Starting for the US was Monty Spindler who battled with Brazil's Roberto Ermel aka Little Boy and Alain Gabet of France. The three teams were neck and neck after three hours. Each team, with the exception of the Euro Team, used three sailors to cover the 5.5 hour leg. By the end of the race, the US had a 20 minute lead but a communication error at the finish line caused the team to loose its large lead and win by only 5 minutes. The European team was forced to retire as they fell far behind after three hours. The WIN was a great moral boost for the US sailors against the formidable Brazilian team, it was clearly a lucky draw of tactics. Impressively, the Brazilian team showed incredible sportsmanship as they hugged and congratulated the US sailors with genuine enthusiasm after the race.
