AMERICA WINS THE FIRST LEG OF THE TAWR2000!: Just before arriving on the island of Tenerife, the US scored a devastating victory over the mighty Brazilians to capture the first leg of the TAWR2000. The win was pretty much in the bag the day before as the teams left Morocco and raced towards the Canary Islands. On that day, the US had finished 4.8 miles ahead which also gave them a three to one wins over the Brazilians. But a dispute over the scoring system kept the Brazilians in the running as they argued for a system that would be based on miles. This system could potentially give the Brazilians the lead if the Americans finish more than 4 miles behind the Brazilian on the last race. The argument created a little tension between the teams but civility was maintained by all members. So it came down to the last race and both teams sent out their strongest sailor. At the start, the sailors crossed the line early and a general recall was issues. At the restart, the US took the lead and maintained it until the winds dropped completely and the race was canceled. With the lead at the time of the cancellation, the Americans celebrated the win as all hopes for the Brazilians faded. The group wrapped up the racing for the day and moved towards the finish line some 60 miles away. What awaits them that evening, is the biggest challenge of this event.
