FINAL LEG ONE REPORT:Whether you were windsurfing across the Atlantic, or attempting to row across the Pacific, last week, the ocean proved dangerous and unpredictable enough to make news in media around the globe. The dramatic rescue at sea off the coast of the Canary Islands that ended the TransAtlantic Windsurf Race (TAWR2000) made the pages of Sports Illustrated this week. In the April 17 edition, on page 30, TAWR2000 was mentioned in a roundup story called "Misadventures at Sea." Globo TV/USA, the Brazilian cable network that reaches more than 5-million subscribers in the United States, carried extensive coverage of last week's rescue of the Brazilian and US teams by the Canary Islands Coast Guard. The same storm that knocked out two of the TAWR boats also killed two fishermen off the waters of Tenerife.
All members of the US team are home safely as well as the Brazilian team. Considerable discussions are in progress concerning the continuation of the event. All involved are focusing on the challenge as well as reflecting on the lessons and impressions made during the first of three legs of the TAWR2000. Look for an in-depth display of the eventful first leg in the upcoming issue of American Windsurfer magazine. When the TAWR2000 resumes, you can count on americanwindsurfer.com to continue our exclusive reports.
